Paradise on earth

Discover the quiet rhythms of nature

The Tibetan word 'Shambala' means 'Paradise on Earth'.

Whether you discover it in the bush, your own paradise is here - deep within the heart and soul of Shambala.

Enhancing the natural environment

The 30 hectare Douw Steyn Dam was constructed in 2001 on sound ecological and geological principles to supply water for the reserve. The earth-constructed dam wall features multiple arches, creating the visual effect of a waterfall in a natural valley. It offers watering points for the wildlife and is home to hippos, crocodiles and a large, varied fish population, all of which are expertly monitored on a continuous basis.

The dam is truly an engineering masterpiece that blends ancient earth wall techniques with modern scientific knowledge of materials and state-of-the-art computer based design methods. In addition, a key focus of the construction phase was to create maximum employment opportunities for the local communities, in line with Shambala’s policy of supporting and working in partnership with the local people. With skilled and experienced masons supported by a motivated workforce, the project was successfully completed within a remarkably short time, resulting in the Douw Steyn Dam spilling for the first time in January 2002.
